Common Tankless Water Heater Problems & Their Solutions
Tankless water heaters are an excellent way to save on your energy bills, free up space in your home, and make your carbon footprint a little smaller. But while they come with many benefits, things do go wrong from time to time. And since these water heaters are different from traditional water heaters, the solutions are not always the same. To help you navigate some common water heater problems and their solutions, read below.
No Hot Water
You go to relax in a hot bath or shower, and while you wait and wait, the water never seems to heat up. This problem is one of the most common with tankless water heaters, but usually, the source of the problem is something simple. Below are the things to look for.
- First, check to make sure that its electric power source has not come unplugged. If it uses a gas supply, make sure that everything is connected properly and that you have not run out of gas. If any of these are a problem, you can easily fix them on your own.
- Look to see if the burner and flame rod are functioning correctly, generating the needed sparks. If it’s not, give us a call.
- Check the control panel and see if it’s displaying an error. If it is, do a system reset and see if this fixes the problem. If it does not, have us come out and assist you.
Water Is Too Hot
If your water is coming out so hot that it is uncomfortable or risks causing burns, you need to get the temperature down. In most cases, this is a quick and simple fix. Below are the things to look for.
- Check the thermostat and make sure it is set to a comfortable and safe temperature. You want it to be set to 120 degrees or less for the water to be safe. If it was set to high, lower the temperature to the safe range and then check your water temperature again in about an hour. You should notice a significant difference.
- If the temperature on the thermostat is in the safe range, but the water is still too hot, there could be an issue with the thermostat or obstructions in the plumbing, causing small amounts of water to become super-heated rather than evenly heating large amounts of water. In both cases, it’s best to have us come out and fix the issue.
Water Pressure Is Too Low
There are few problems as annoying as having low water pressure. You want to enjoy your shower so you can relax, but instead you are fighting to rinse the shampoo from your hair. While this is frustrating, there might be things you can troubleshoot. Below are the things to look for.
- The first thing to do is make sure this isn’t a utility company issue. To do this, test the water pressure outside your home or ask a neighbor if they are also experiencing water pressure issues. If your outdoor spigot is fine and the neighbors are not having issues, the problem is within your home.
- Next, determine if this is a consistent problem or if it only occurs when other appliances are running. If you notice that it only occurs when other appliances are using water at the same time, you can either make sure you are limiting your water use at any given time, or you can call us so we can offer you a solution that allows you to use all the water you want at the same time without losing pressure.
- If the water pressure is low even when only used in one location, there could be obstructions in the plumbing or water filter. Check the filter on your own, but it’s best that you leave handling obstructions to us.
