Expected Life of a Washing Machine
New washers are sturdier than washers of yore, except for 1940s Magtags, some of which are still chugging along today!
New washers are also more energy-efficient. A LOT more energy efficient; replacing your old washing machine may be a good thing for your budget in the long term.
According to Consumer Reports, washing machines last around 10 years on average. There are ways to extend the life of your washer — we’ll mention those later — and there are almost certain ways to shorten it. We’ll list a few of them now.
Things That Shorten Your Washer’s Life
Using the wrong detergent.
Over-sudsing can overheat the washer’s pump, an invitation to breakdown. Also, the wrong detergent — one that cakes or foams too much — can clog the washer’s soap dispenser or drain.
Using too much detergent, even the correct type.
See above. Plus, excessive sudsing can trigger an endless cycle of washing and draining. Your poor washer will be exhausted!
Not cleaning the washer regularly.
Lint and other debris can block the washer’s drainage system.
Using the washer as a storage space for dirty laundry.
See above. Plus, it just plain stinks.
Leaving wet laundry in the washer too long.
Wet laundry is a petri dish for bacteria, and that bacteria can transfer to the washer itself. Also, permanent stains may set in if you let the laundry sit too long.
Overloading the washer.
An overloaded washer has to work harder, placing stress on all parts and causing premature wear and tear.
Washing a small load in a large-capacity washer.
See above. Plus, undersized loads don’t clean the clothes as well because there’s not enough water pressure to move them around or friction to remove dirt.
Failing to maintain your washing machine.
Like your car, your washing machine needs regular tune-ups to keep it running smoothly. A professional appliance technician can spot potential problems before they become big (and expensive) ones.
Signs You Need Professional Washer Repair
Here are some reasons to call a professional. Most should be fairly obvious:
The washer leaks water.
Check your hoses, connectors, connector gaskets, and drain. If everything’s a-okay in those areas, call us to take a look.
The washer leaves streaks or spots on your clothing.
If you’re using the correct detergent, fabric softener, and bleach, and your clothes are still streaky or spotted, it’s time for a professional.
The washer takes too long to wash a load of laundry.
Call us before the motor fails.
The washer doesn’t spin or agitate.
The machine’s drive belt and motor are prime suspects. It may be an easy repair (belt drive replacement) or not so easy (motor replacement).
The washer is making strange noises.
Check the drum for loose objects or anything else that doesn’t belong. If the noises persist, call us.
The washer doesn’t fill with water.
There could be something wrong with the inlet valve — blockage or failure.
The washer doesn’t drain.
Check for clogs in the drain and hoses. If they’re clear, call us to inspect the pump.
The washer won’t start.
Verify that there’s power at the outlet. If the problem lies with the washer, we’ll inspect the timer, lid switch, motor, circuit board, or anything else contributing to “Failure to Launch.”

Replacement vs. Repair: When to Buy a New Washing Machine
The average lifespan of a washer is about 10 years. Plus, older machines are much less energy-efficient than newer models, and they don’t have the latest and greatest features.
Other things to consider:
- The repair cost: When a repair costs more than half the price of a new washing machine, it makes more sense to buy new and have a warranty in hand.
- The frequency of repairs: If you’ve had to repair your washing machine more often than a finicky sports car, start looking for an upgrade.
- Your warranty: If your machine is still under warranty, that warranty should cover most repairs.
Choosing the Right Washing Machine for Your Home
Do your homework before you buy.
Front-loading machines are more energy-efficient, use less water, and generate less noise than top-loaders. On the downside, they’re more expensive and can’t tolerate certain types of detergent.
Top-loading machines are less expensive than front-loaders, and they’re easier to load and unload. But they use more water and energy, and they’re not as gentle on clothes.
The New Washer Checklist
Capacity: How much laundry do you do in a week? You’ll need a large-capacity machine if you have a large family.
Energy efficiency: Energy Star-rated machines use less water and energy. They’ll save you money in the long run.
Price: Decide how much you’re willing to spend, and then look for a machine that fits your budget.
Features: These include automatic dispensers, delayed start timers, and steam cycles. Some washers even connect to your smartphone! Netflix or laundry? Now you have a choice.
Our Washing Machine Installation Services
Simple installation is a DIY affair, as long as you have the truck to transport the washer and the muscle to move it into place. It doesn’t take a pro to plug in a washer or hook up the hoses.
So when does it make sense to hire a professional installer?
- If you don’t feel confident about your ability to move the washer into place or hook it up, it’s best to hire a professional.
- If you’re replacing an old washing machine with a new one, let a professional handle the installation to do it right. Also, a pro will haul your old washer to the recycling center for you.
- Specialty washers, like under-the-counter or stacked models, usually need professional installation.
- Finally, you may have to run new plumbing and electrical lines if you’re adding a washer where there wasn’t one before. Most appliance technicians don’t install electrical outlets. For that, you’ll have to call a licensed electrician.

These tips can help prevent problems with your washer and lower your utility bills.
- Inspect the hoses connected to your washer for any signs of damage.
- Clean the inside of your machine once a month to maintain its energy efficiency.
- Use suitable detergent and the correct amount for your wash load.
- Don’t overload your washer or allow loads to become unbalanced.
- Don’t leave wet laundry in the washer for long and allow mildew and mold to grow. Leave the door ajar after wash cycles if you have a front-loading washer.
