6 Steps to Clean a Blocked Fridge Water Dispenser

Regular cleaning is the key to keeping your water dispenser free of dirt and mineral deposits. With a few simple tools and a little effort, you can clear any build-up from your refrigerator’s water dispenser and the lines leading to it.

What You’ll Need

• A screwdriver
• Filtered vinegar
• A toothbrush
• Water

Instructions

1. Turn off the valve that supplies water to your dispenser. Use a screwdriver to loosen the tubing from the dispenser. Slip the end of the tube out.
2. Pour three cups of vinegar into the tube. Hold the tube upright so that the vinegar drains into the reservoir. After a few minutes, pin the tube to a nearby wall or tape it to the refrigerator to allow the vinegar to continue draining.
3. Empty your ice cube tray and turn the ice cube maker on. This will suck vinegar into the system and clean the ice cube maker.
4. Start your water dispenser and let the vinegar run out. This will clean the system and any fixtures in it.
5. Scrub the spout area and the disconnected end of the tubing with vinegar and a toothbrush. Clean the drainage plate of the water dispenser while you’re at it.
6. Reattach the water hose and run the water through the dispenser. Throw out several glasses of water until the vinegar has drained from the system. Leave your ice cube dispenser on; throw out the first batch or two of ice since that ice will taste like vinegar.

This simple process will ensure that the water you and your family are drinking is clean and fresh.

Run vinegar through the system every six months, or when your water dispenser shows signs of slowing down.

Treating your water dispenser with a little TLC will ensure that it treats you nicely in return.
